India Can Too!!
What an election! What a verdict! This election is going to go down as one of the most important ones in the history of not only our young sixty two year old country, but also in the world. So after the worlds most powerful country, the US voted for a change, a progressive stand, a peaceful stand by bringing Barack Obama, the worlds largest democracy voted for non communal, and non divisive politics. It makes me happy, it makes me mighty happy (if there's such a term!! )
Some observations/opinions
India is alive, not only in its few metros but in the 6lakh villages, and even these villages this time have voted not for a caste or a religion but for the dismissal of this division. They are weary of the attempts to divide them, they want development, they donot want to be left out of the country's growth story
Left paid for the blind violence in Nandigram, more than its economic policies, I think it paid because it failed to protect its people, it failed to safeguard the fundamental rights of its people, it left (no pun intended) poor people to die, the same peasants for whom the original naxalbari movement was for!! Its here it dissappointed not only the Bengal intelligentia but also the mass. Its still to be seen though what happens in 2011 assembly elections.
Delhi INC: 7/7 Mumbai INC: 6/6 Any doubts we want development not arguements about temples and mosques!!
I would want to make a clarification here, I am much more anti BJP then I can ever be pro Congress. Its almost as Congress is a lesser evil. At least you wouldnot find Congress leaders making non secular comments, urging a certain section of India to vacate their country ( why dont these leaders get shot!! ) OK they cant because we have freedom of speech after all we are a democracy. Just for that sake, we should let them be. If Indians want fundamental politics well, we cant do much. But we dont!! Thats the most obvious mandate this time.
Rath Yatra, Loh purush, Nidar neta... well, I think we would appreciate if they talked about better governance, no riots, inclusive growth and sustainable development
One more thing dont make personal attacks, well as one leader pointed out "Shifting of venue of IPL is less of a national shame than Gujarat riots!!"
Its easy to say forget and move on, but sometimes its important to remember, especially our painful mistakes, so that we as citizens dont repeat them.
We finally managed to bring a less fragmented government to power, kudos to all of us!! So what if the voter turnout was not great, we need to work on it, but for the moment can we look at a hopeful picture.
This means a lot to the world. When our neighbouring countries are increasingly becoming conflict ridden, it means a lot for 1.1 bn to support democratic form of government. It shows hold on, we are still there!
To the US & UN and all other numerous world organisations, it gives a chance to pursue policies as a continuation. Also somewhere I feel ideologies of Democrats & Congress (atleast on paper) seem similar.
To the government in power, yes its a clear mandate for you, Singh is King, but only so long as you perform. We need more than lip service, more than pseudo secularism, you have promised a lot, better deliver, both sides of digital divide seems to have voted for you, bear that in mind.
Balance, performance is the name of the game. Else beware, we the people of India are good at springing surprises. We have an especially good sense of humour.
